On and off-ramps

Providers advertise a percentage fee and then convert at a rate away from mid-market. The router below models both, because on a five-figure conversion the FX spread is usually the larger number.

Ramps, answered

+ Why does the same provider quote two very different prices?

Because the rail changes the cost far more than the brand does. A card purchase carries interchange of roughly 3–4%; the same provider over open banking or SEPA is usually under 1%. If you only change one thing, change the rail.

+ Where is the hidden cost?

The FX spread. Providers quote a headline percentage fee and then convert at a rate 0.5–1.5% away from mid-market. On a 10,000 EUR conversion that spread is often larger than the visible fee, which is why the estimator here models both.

+ What is the cheapest possible route?

Institutional minting at par with the issuer, which is what Circle Mint offers for USDC at zero fee. Retail users get closest to that by depositing in the ramp's home currency and converting on an exchange with deep books, avoiding both card rails and FX conversion.
